Biographical history

Georges-Etienne Durocher est né à Bonnyville, Alberta, le 31 août 1923, fils de M. et Mme Philias Durocher. Il était membre de la congrégation des missionnaires Oblats et professeur au Collège Saint-Jean entre 1950 et 1980. Il a fait ses études primaires à Bonnyville, Alberta (1929-1936) et ses études secondaires au collège Saint-Jean, Edmonton, (1936-1942). Il a étudié la philosophie (1943-1946) et la théologie (1946-1950) au scolasticat de Lebret, Saskatchewan. Il est ordonné prêtre en 1949. L’année d’après, il reçoit sa première obédience pour le Collège Saint-Jean d’Edmonton où il enseigna durant de longues années. Il profite de l’été pour parfaire sa formation à Ottawa, Seattle et Québec. Il obtient son accréditation d’enseignant et sa Maitrise en bibliothéconomie. Il est le premier bibliothécaire du Collège Saint-Jean. Il décède le 4 juillet 1994 et est inhumé au cimetière de Saint-Albert, Alberta.

Georges-Etienne Durocher was born in Bonnyville, Alberta, on August 31 1923, son of Mr. and Mrs. Philias Durocher. He was a member of the congregation of missionary oblates and professor at the Collège Saint-Jean from 1950 to 1980. He did his primary studies in Bonnyville, Alberta (1929-1936) and his secondary studies at the Collège Saint-Jean in Edmonton (1936-1942). He studied philosophy (1943-1946) and theology (1946-1950) and the theological college of Lebret, Saskatchewan. He was ordained as a priest in 1949. The next year, he received his first allegiance for the Collège Saint-Jean in Edmonton where he would teach for many years. He continued pursuing training during the summers in Ottawa, Seattle, and Québec. He obtained his teaching accreditation and his Master’s degree in library studies. He became the first librarian at the Collège Saint-Jean. He passed away on July 4th, 1994 and is buried at a cemetery in Saint-Albert, Alberta.

Ce fonds fut acquis par les Archives de l'Université de l'Alberta (UAA) de la part des Archives Saint-Jean, anciennement situé au Campus Saint-Jean de l'Université de l'Alberta. Le but principal des Archives Saint-Jean était de préserver le matériel archivistique qui avait déjà été acquis au fil des ans par l'ancien IRFOC (Institut de recherche francophone de l’ouest canadien) et ensuite par l’ancien IPFOC (Institut pour le patrimoine de la francophonie de l’ouest canadien).

This fonds was acquired by the University of Alberta Archives in 2019 from the Archives Saint-Jean that was previously housed at the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean. The Archives Saint-Jean’s main goal was to preserve archival materials that had already been acquired by the IRFOC (Institut de recherche francophone de l’ouest canadien) and subsequently by IPFOC (Institut pour le patrimoine de la francophonie de l’ouest canadien).

The fonds contains various documents in different formats such as: microfilms, annals, books, journals, magazines, directories, book excerpts, biographies, songbooks, illustrations, conference excerpts, historical records, research notes, bulletins, memoires, newspaper clippings, travel journals, promotional booklets, advertisements, historical snippets, study notes, articles published in journals, meeting reports, agendas, statutes and rules, instruction sheets, forms, poems, photo negatives, letters, maps, prospectuses, brochures, interviews, inventories, logos, pamphlets, class schedules, a collection of the college alumni who died in the field of honor during the 2nd World War, liturgical leaflets, a list of bisophes in Edmonton from 1871-1973, brochures for the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton from 1976-1978, the broadcast schedule of Ici Radio-Canada during the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, notes on the history of the Franco-Albertan community, souvenir albums, conferences, indexes, and audio cassettes.
