    ca.1 m of textual records and other material. Collection includes 95 prints, ca. 140 photographs, ca. 670 slides, 15 film reels, ca. 150 videocassettes, 44 sound tape reels, 16 sound discs, and 6 sound cartridges. Approximately 200 monographs and bound periodicals have been catalogued and made available in the regular library collection. Multiple copies of publications and other non-circus material have been weeded from the collection.

    Biographical history

    George James Chapman (1920-1991) was an avid circus enthusiast and collector of memorabilia. He was actively involved with the local Shrine (AAOMS) club circus committee and also served as Western Regional Vice-President of the Circus Fans Association of America. Chapman also briefly operated a mail-order business, Circus Time Video ca. 1989-90.

    Custodial history

    The collection was donated by the Chapman family in 1998.

    Scope and content

    The collection consists of published circus promotional materials (programs, posters, etc.), trade periodicals, records of several circus-related organizations that Chapman collected or was involved with, and miscellaneous material in a variety of media formats. The collection is divided into series by subject matter and media type.

        The George J. Chapman Circus Collection is housed at the University of Alberta Library's Research and Collections Resource Facility (RCRF).
