The School of Native Studies at the University of Alberta ( U of A) was established in 1988 and moved to a Faculty in June of 2006. The establishment of an academic unit at the U of A which centred on Native studies had been in discussion since 1972. It was during this year that the University Senate Committee met with representatives of the Indian Association of Alberta. In 1978, the U of A General Faculties Council established a Standing Committee on Native Studies which consisted of faculty and student members, as well as representatives of the Native community at large.
The Committee proposed the establishment of the School of Native Studies. The School would focus on a range of courses that would lead to a Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies and be multidisciplinary in its approach. Both faculty and students members of the School would take part in research which special attention on land use and language of Native peoples including Indigenous, Inuit, and Metis of the Canadian West and North. The School would be established in 1988.
