Historique
William George Corns was born on October 17, 1916. He spent his childhood in Grassy Lake, Alberta. In 1931 Corns completed the twelfth grade in Taber, Alberta before going to Calgary Normal School. He then spent time teaching in schools near Grassy Lake and Vauxhall, Alberta.
In 1938 Corns entered the University of Alberta (U of A) in Edmonton. He completed his B.Sc. in Agriculture in 1942 and received the Agriculture Institute gold medal. Corns then received his M.SC. in Plant Biochemistry from the U of A in 1944 and his Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from the University of Toronto in 1946. From 1946 to 1980 Corns was a research and teaching professor in the Department of Plant Science at the U of A. For ten years Corn was the Head of the Department of Plant Science.
Corns and his student’s research focused on the action of selective herbicides and plant growth regulators in crops, reforestation, and other areas of vegetation growth and control. Corn retired in 1980.
Corns was married to nurse Mary Corns (nees Hastings). Corns had two sons Ian and Roy. Corn and his wife retired to Victoria, British Columbia in 1980. Corns passed away on October 29, 2011.
