Note: Cockran is sometimes incorrectly written as Cochrane, as the spelling was altered by his son, Reverend Thomas Cochrane.
Sent in 1825 by the Church Missionary Society from England to the Red River Settlement, Rev. William Cockran spent decades establishing missions for the Church of England in Rupert's Land. One of the earliest missionaries in Rupert's Land, he fostered agricultural settlement as a key part of evangelizing the local population. He worked at Upper Church (later St John's cathedral), Lower Church (later St. Andrew's), St Peter’s (Dynevor), and St. Mary's at Portage la Prairie.
