        History

        Dr. Robert James Carney was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia on November 3, 1933. Carney had many jobs throughout his life including, waiter on CPR dining cars, a teacher and principal. He was also a Superintendent of School Programmes in the Northwest Territories, Executive Director of the Alberta Catholic School Trustees Association, Executive Director Northern Development Group Government of Alberta, and Deputy Minister of Recreation, Parks, and Wildlife, Government of Alberta.

        Carney was Professor of Education Foundations in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta (U of A). He was also Chair of the Department of Education Foundations during his time at the U of A. He retired from the U of A as Professor Emeritus.

        Carney served on several boards including Board of Newman Theological College and St. Joseph’s Seminary and the Misericordia Hospital, Edmonton, Alberta.

        Carney was married to Verlie and had four children, Brenda, Sean, Mark, and Brian. His son Mark Carney was the governor of the Bank of Canada and governor of the Bank of England. He passed away on December 9, 2009.
