Diane Elizabeth Bessai (née Lane) grew up in St. Thomas and Brantford, Ontario and earned a BA degree in English from the University of Western Ontario (UWO) in 1953. She went on to earn MA and PhD degrees from the University of London. She worked for McMillan Publishing Company in Toronto, as the associate women’s editor of the Times-Journal, and as a residence warden at the UWO. Bessai joined the English department at the University of Alberta in 1961 and became a professor emeritus in 1995.
Bessai has published several books about Canadian drama, playwrights, and literature, especially of Western Canada. She was a founding board member of NeWest Press, a publishing company that publishes Western Canadian authors.
Diane Bessai married Frank Bessai, a fellow member of the U of A Department of English. They had four children together.
